Their children are unhappy, and the parents aren’t far behind. Unable to sell their house, they now have two mortgages and are in trouble with the bank.

This gets them involved with Marcus, an estate agent of low moral character. Of all the books I’ve read by her, this was my least favorite. Usually I get so caught up in the antics of Wickham’s delightful, quirky characters that I read it all in madeleinw rush, but this time I found myself struggling to get through it, telling myself just to finish so I could read something else. I think the main problem was that none of the characters, dewirable one exception, was likable at all.

More recent novels by this author feature characters who are definitely flawed but still fetching, whereas these characters were either shallow or nasty or both. And the ending was rather abrupt and hurried. Not recommended unless you’re determined to read everything by this talented author.

A fun diversion while waiting for a new Sophie Kinsella. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I like this author very much but this book was tedious and unenjoyable.

I love Sophie Madeline, so I decided to read all the Wickham books as well. I’m a little sorry I read this one which I think was her first. I found most of the characters at best unpleasant and at worst reprehensible. Only Jonathan had any decency and deserved better than an adulterous wife who “deserved” her affair. And that’s all it was. She wasn’t in love. If she had been, I might have forgiven her.

Anthea, I think, meant well, but she really didn’t know how to go about motivating her sons. And Alice was a brat, although I could understand her loneliness when her best friend moved away. Ginny may have wanted the best for Piers, but she didn’t really give him the support he needed. Marcus was a jerk.

I admit to feeling bad for Piers at the end, and Wikham hope things eventually went well for him. By the end, I really didn’t care that much about what happened to the characters. Enjoyed this book, along with others by Sophie Desirale. She’s always a favourite for light content. You can always count on her to provide you with funny, over the top scenarios.

Things that only can happen to you if you’re lucky or if you’re reading a good book.

Book review: ‘A Desirable Residence’ by Madeleine Wickham | write meg!

I usually enjoy reading Madeleine Wickham’s novels. They are purely self-indulgent, and feature interesting plot and flawed yet sympathetic madeleinf. You can tell she feels no affection or interest in the characters she created, as they are vapid and unlikeable rrsidence best and contemptible at worst.

One person found this helpful. Different than the shopaholic books, darker, but still that familiar style. Worth a read for sure if you love her work. This book was wichkam fun read. However, I’ve read many of her books and this wasn’t her best. The ending could have used a lot more development. It’s as if she was up against a deadline and just decided to stop writing. That was disappointing, but overall, if you are a fan of her work, I would definately still read it. See all 80 reviews.
