Wir Lassen Sie Verhungern Die Massenvernichtung in Der Dritten Welt Jean Ziegle | eBay
I am still reading this amazing book. I vrrhungern had the feeling, that we are just trying not to see the disaster, we are making possible.
After the 2nd World war the question was: Our children will ask us the same. I hope, we find some good answers and a way to change this. The original title, “We are letting them starve: The genocide in ziwgler Third World”, is a direct accusation that hits the reader before he’s even opened the book. Like some of his previous books “L’empire de la honte”, The Empire Of Shame, comes to mindit deals with straight data generally in an objective manner, although it sometimes adopts a controversial angle, and it definitely means to provoke.
However, this is not really the umpteenth manifesto of yet another armchair world fixer; it is a well-researched study about the ongoing Third World food plight and its causes, written by the former U.
Wir Lassen Sie Verhungern Die Massenvernichtung in Der Dritten Welt Jean Ziegle
Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, who is also a former Swiss MP and Sociology professor at the Sorbonne and Geneva universities, and summarizes a decade of hands-on experience with famine around the world.
World Food Report our planet could feed nearly twelve billion people – lasseh as many as it currently carries. This problem has become chronic and it continues to grow and spread, for the most part unreported in the mass media; those ziwgler that do make ziiegler news, like famines in Darfur, Ethiopia, Somalia etc.
In this book the fourth in a series dedicated to world hungerMr Ziegler blames, names and shames those he considers the originators and the accomplices of this scourge: Many of the usual suspects listed are no secret, but several others might cause surprise just one sample: Among the accomplices, though he doesn’t say so outright, are “we”, the consumers, who enable this injustice to continue, day in and day out, by choosing to buy from those companies Mr Ziegler points his accusatory finger at.
It also offers tentative approaches for solutions, though he doesn’t follow them to the end with as many data projections as he does to illustrate the problems. The book is written in a clear style, easy to read, informative and heavily backed by data. Some of its conclusions sample: Mr Ziegler approves of Zimbabwe’s vethungern expropriation policy are probably going to raise some readers’ eyebrows.
The topic of world famine is extremely complex, wie this book only attempts to blow the whistle on its causes, not a holistic how-to fix, although it mentions grassroot movements like Lawsen or Via Campesina as one of the possible ways to tackle the problem.
For all its personal compromise with his subject, Mr Ziegler manages to convey the bitter consequences of short-sighted and greed-motivated policies without bitterness; if anything, it attempts to be optimistic about the future.
Which, given the success of the massive PR campaign to promote biodiesel as an all-good solution, among others, I find somewhat illogical and hard to share. And those are the only two subjective reasons why I gave it ziiegler stars instead of the full five: I’d like to believe his motivation in this case is entirely based on fighting world hunger, not following some hidden personal agendas as seems to been the case when he refers to other, strictly political topics.
I recommend this book as an interesting general intro to the social and demographic consequences of modern food production in the context of globalization, and its hidden pitfalls.
