Recommended to Nicole Catherine by: This poem has so many layers. First I would just recommend reading it aloud, listening to the sounds of the words, and then the second time through you can worry about what they mean.

And that’s really interesting, too. All the little historical references are so much fun to discover and puzzle out – seriously! And I don’t even like this sort of thing usually, I had to read this poem for school. I’m actually enjoying analyzing it!

Then follows a long, redundant commentary which does not even pretend to scholarly objectivity but preaches, hard, to the choir. Then follows a few essays by others, suffering from the same defects. We read Chesterton, we fans of Chesterton, because we like the flavor and the exuberance of his absurd exaggerations or, as he is often pleased to say, his jokes. People who take his jokes too seriously are the people who make lepahto rest of us chestertob to leave him suffering in obscurity.

If this was the first book with Chesterton’s name on it I ever read I’d never have read another one. Reading GK is difficult but worth reading.

I read “Lepanto,” and man-oh-man, G. Chesterton’s poetry never does disappoint. I read it aloud albeit aloneand found myself in almost some kind of a trance, rocking and rising to the brilliance and the rhythm of this work.

Unfortunately, I find that Chesterton’s rhyme-scheme is too sing-song and pedantic. Of course, this may be the point, since Chesterton places great emphasis on the ability to laugh, even at serious topics; this Lepanto is another good poem by Chesterton, with some masterful word-play “[The ships] fling great shadows foe-wards,” as opposed to “forwards”and excellent foils the dark, suntanned Arab commander standing on deck, while chrsterton pale, sunless Christian slaves work the oars underneath.

Of course, this may be the point, since Chesterton places great emphasis on the ability to laugh, even at serious topics; this even shows up in the poem itself in the contrast between the humorless Chesteron “blood-red crescent, the crescent of his lips,” and the smile of the comic poet Cervantes, which is described as “not as Sultans smile. I am no poetry connoisseur, but this great stuff. Moving, powerful, lyrical, rich, orthodox, insightful. I have taken to reading it to my children.

The notes and various essays included in this volume are also very good and helpful in reading the poem. They have dared the white republics up the capes of Italy. The have dashed the Adriatic ’round the Lion of the Sea.

Amazing poem–and the commentary in this book is invaluable for ordinary folks like me to get its meaning. This chestertn opened a whole narrative for me on the crusades–a space of history which for me is nearly blank. I will never vhesterton now, for example, that Miguel de Cervantes– who’s town I lived in while at university in Spain–fought and was wounded in that last crusade. The commentary included in the book gives a wonderful historical background to this little known battle between the naval forces representing Christianity This battle was really the final push against the inroads Islam was making into Europe and stopped its advancement through the leadership of Don Jon of Austria and the prayers and intercessions of Pope Pius V and other devoted Christians.
