Las secciones consideradas han sido: International Classification of Headache Disorders 2. Por leucodistrofiss, de la Lecodistrofias, 4. Se ha adaptado de la siguiente manera: An Esp Pediatr ; Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo; The most frequent reasons for medical consultation, diagnoses and procedures in neuropediatrics were selected and leuucodistrofias the most appropriate International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification 5th ed. Disorders were grouped by sections, and allocated to the various members lediatria the working group 13 child neurologists from 10 hospitals in Madrid and environs.
ICDCM codes were assigned to: In every case, the most appropriate ICD-9 code was sought for the respective oediatria. No codes were invented but the working group did take certain liberties with interpretation, which nevertheless showed respect for general ICDCM philosophy and are described in full in the text.
The creation of this ICD-9 adaptation will not only enhance diagnostic coding in child neurology departments, but will also provide them with a useful tool for setting up databases to enable information to be retrospectively analyzed and shared by the different health centers.
Introduction Coding arises in response to the need for a standardized language that will pedjatria for the most unequivocal communication possible among health professionals.
It facilitates the handling and management of clinical information and the setting-up of databases, which will in turn enable such information to be studied, interpreted and shared. Furthermore, health-care quality policy renders it essential for diagnoses and procedures to be computerized so as to simplify decision-making by health administrators pediatriia related groups and costs per procedure.
ICDCMis the internationally used coding system accepted by the international scientific community and health authorities. Insofar as child neurology is concerned, this classification has limitations because: As a consequence, it was judged both useful and important for the child-neurologist fraternity to identify ICD-9 codes that corresponded to diagnoses and procedures currently in use, and ensure that these leucodistrofiaw be duly assigned.
This paper outlines the systematic approach followed by the WG, as well as the codes selected for allocation to the respective diagnostic descriptions or procedures. Leucodistgofias this end, disorders were grouped by section, and the different sections were then allocated to the peduatria members of the WG 13 child neurologists from 10 hospitals in Madrid and environs.
The collaboration of the records departments of the respective hospitals was sought. Codes were chosen subject to agreement by the WG, leucodistgofias the coordinating group then reviewed and eliminated any diagnoses that were duplicated in the different sections and minimally amended some diagnostic descriptions in order to incorporate terminology that was more up-to-date. The sections considered were: Fetal and perinatal neurology. Chromosomal and genomic disorders. Headaches and related disorders.
Infectious and inflammatory disorders. Traumatic, toxic and iatrogenic disorders. Morphology of nervous system neoplasms. Inborn errors of metabolism with neurological repercussions. Vertebral column and spinal cord disorders. Reasons for medical consultation. The ICDCM code structure consists of peciatria 3-digit rubric for category, a 4-digit rubric for subcategory, and a 5-digit rubric for subclassification, e.
In all cases, an effort was made to find the leucodistroofias that provided the best fit for the respective diagnoses. While both should rightly have the same category or subcategory, the Leucodkstrofias was nevertheless respected and the code assigned that best covered the disorder which had no direct entry in the ICD. Furthermore, the 4th or 5th digit was used with a different and more current meaning, since at times the ICD subcategories and subclassifications make no sense whatsoever, e.
The ICD-9 5th digit subclassification is used in these subcategories for: This was adapted as follows: Furthermore, in the case of tumour pathology, coding by tumour site and histological type would be required. The digitized Excel version of this coding enables users to make a quick search of diagnoses, by entering broad search terms and synonyms of the descriptor.
When it came to allocating codes, account was taken of the fact that these form the basis for managing the diagnostic related groups DRG which link codes to use lejcodistrofias resources costs. As a result, our adaptation involved no substantial modification of specific weights and costs per procedure.
All are leucodisgrofias below in tables. How to code The ICDCM recommends choosing the most specific diagnostic code, with the greatest number of digits possible: In the event of not finding it, search through other sections that could also cover it.
Diagnoses are shown under only one disorder section despite the fact that they might pertain to several such sections The digitized Excel version of this coding enables users to lsucodistrofias a quick diagnostic search, by entering a term similar to or synonymous with the descriptor into the search engine.
If a specific diagnosis is not possible, proceed to a more generic diagnosis. The better a case is coded, the more information becomes available for its management. Conclusions This adaptation of the ICD-9 will facilitate and enhance diagnostic coding in child neurology departments. Moreover, it allows for consistent, standardized coding of child neurological diagnoses based on an internationally accepted system.
It is a useful ,eucodistrofias for epidemiological and clinical management and research in child neurology departments, and enables databases with common criteria to be set up, something that will in turn make it possible for information to be analyzed and shared, and epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic multicentre studies to be conducted.
